The
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has implemented a system
of self-compliance that significantly changes how it deals
with Canadian importers. While in the past trade compliance
was reviewed on a transaction-by-transaction basis, today
the CBSA expects importers to take responsibility for the
accuracy of their own trade data and customs declarations.
The importer is responsible for reporting their goods to the
CBSA at the time of entry into Canada. It is also important
to note that the importer must report to the CBSA any post-entry
adjustments not declared at the time of entry.
The
CBSA expects self-compliance and will enforce the accuracy
of trade data through an active audit program targeting businesses
like yours. Non-compliance can result in significant penalties.
Where contraventions are discovered, monetary penalties ranging
from $100 to $25,000 per infraction could be assessed
