Vehicle ImportsEffective January 1, 2017, Transport Canada increased registration fees associated with vehicle imports under the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) Program.

The Registrar of Imported Vehicles is a national program allowing Canadians to import vehicles purchased at retail in the United States. Upon importation, the vehicles are registered, inspected and certified for compliance with requirements under Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Regulations.

The first increase since 2005, changes to RIV fees will be as follows:

Vehicles entering the RIV Program with a Vehicle Import Form – Form 1

  • Fee increased from $195.00 + GST/HST to $295.00 + GST/HST for vehicles entering through any border crossing with the exception of Quebec.
  • Fee increased from $195.00 + GST and QST to $295.00 + GST and QST, for vehicles entering through border crossings in Quebec

Vehicles entering the RIV Program with a Vehicle Imported for Parts – Form 3 (parts-only vehicle)

  • Fee increased from $60.00 + GST/HST to $90.00 + GST/HST for vehicles entering through any border crossing with the exception of Quebec.
  • Fee increased from $60.00 + GST and QST to $90.00 + GST and QST, for vehicles entering through border crossings in Quebec
